Are you your own worst rival?

I belong to Toastmasters. Have you heard of them? If so, do you belong to a club?

We meet on Saturday mornings and if there is one thing that must happen during that time is a lot of laughter and fun! After all, as one member says, if she’s going to give up a morning – a Saturday morning to boot – that must be a requirement!

Today was no exception. Our esteemed leader of the meeting, the Toastmaster, declared a theme of “rivalries” to keep us all on our toes. And since we live a few miles from the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, today’s topical theme was dead-on!

For today is the meeting of the biggest rival in history, it is said in certain circles, with a football playoff game between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. A few of us wore our green, but there was one who showed her true color of purple.

What also had been significant in this meeting were the fast-on-your-feet questions that were answered about rivalries: personal, professional, and most enlightening was that of the internal rivalry.

Until verbalized this day, I had been wrangling with this issue all week long, and upon hearing the internal strife inside is the most intense rivalry of all, it solidified, for me at least, that I am the best competition I’ll ever have! What a relief! I no longer have to worry about YOU or what YOU are doing to take me down!

Of course, I’m not worried about you being in my way at all. However, I am worried about ME standing in my own way… and that happened this week. Although I don’t necessarily believe I was stopped in my tracks. I was simply having an off week, spending it with the crud of colds and flu that’s going around.  When I’m not action in my business, my passion, or my dreams, I get a little sulky.

Does this happen to you? I’d love to hear how you get yourself out of your own way and out of your slump.

To your success,

PeggyLee

I fancy myself solutions oriented - so when I get in my own way, I identify the issue then look for ways to solve it. Sometimes that's just making a connection with a friend who will tell you the truth. Sometimes after identifying the issue, I just get over it :-)

Julia,
Yes, that's true; when putting a name to the problem, oftentimes it simply disappears because the issue was acknowledged. Having a trusting friend who will help you see your truth is key to self-growth. You are blessed to have such a friend (I have one, too!) Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting! I appreciate it and you!

I tried something new the other day based on something I read recently, Before getting out of bed, I visualized what I wanted for the day. Then, I filled in the blank "I choose to experience......."
That day it was "I choose to experience motivation & enthusiasm."
Today, it was "I choose to experience being productive."
Have you tried that one PeggyLee?

Debra,
I have used that method successfully as well. However, what helped me this time was setting an intention the night before. "Tomorrow I will feel much better and be done with my funk!" .... or something to that effect. This works well for me; and the next day I am free and able to look a bit deeper to further release the true emotion causing the roadblock. Thanks for your insightful comments. I appreciate them and you!

There is so much truth in what you have written today! I, too, struggle when I am not able to focus on my business, my passion, or my dreams. I am very grateful for Toastmasters because it is there that I have found my greatest support network. The friends and connections that have come from Toastmasters support my dreams, they encourage and build me up, and each time I walk away from them I feel like I am ready to get back to work.

What I do when I get in a slump? Thankfully, I am able to attend Toastmaster meetings almost weekly and sometimes 3 times in a week! But when I am not able, I am reminded that sometimes it is good to have that personal down time to stop, reflect, and allow growth to catch up to me. The slump is also a great time to re-evaluate growth and goals. In doing so, I reconnect with my purpose and am encouraged by the growth I can see.

To YOUR success! Thank you for another great blog!

Pretty amazing, isn't it, Lisa, how Toastmasters can give us the internal power of success? When we can just "be" that is when, as you mentioned, the reflection and growth come forth. I so appreciate you taking the time to read my words and respond to them! Thank you!
