Men and women approaching the second half of their life hear the song by Peggy Lee (no not me!) over and over in their heads: “Is that all there is? Is all that there is? Is that all there is my friend; then let’s keep dancing…”
How do you know what it is that you want to do for the rest of your life?
The first question to be answered is this: What is your favorite thing to do, your favorite activity? The answer could be what you do for work (claims adjuster); it could be what you do with your family (boating); it could be what you do with your down- or alone-time (reading).
The next question to answer is this: Which world would you like to be in? Is it to remain in the corporate world and one day being company president? Is it in the private sector to become a published author of a book or syndicated column? Or is it something completely off the wall that no one might understand, of being in the limelight, such as an actor or a professional tap dancer?
The third part of the equation is not so much a question, but more on what skills and talents you possess. Are you good at drawing? Do you love working the numbers? Does it seem that your friends and family come to you with a particular and common problem?
How do I know which questions to ask? Because I asked myself those same questions when deciding on a new career and life path after being thrown into my own transition a few years.
