How often do these questions come up for you? If you looked closely, I bet the answer would be nearly, if not, every day.
How do you make the decision? What criteria do you use? What tools do you have to make a sound, wise, and perhaps, profitable decision?
For example, I wanted to continue on with a curriculum after finishing the first course. During the remainder of the year, three more courses were offered as a packaged deal with an overall savings of some dollar amount. This training was the beginning of my coaching career and felt it imperative to continue learning from this master. Plus, CEUs (Continuing Education Credits) were given for 3 out of the 4 courses offered in which could be applied to the ICF (International Coaching Federation) Master Coach Certification I wished to obtain.
Of course, a decision needed to be reached within a short amount of time to take advantage of the discounted offer. We all know how that goes. But how was I going to come to it of sound mind and body?
I applied knowledge gained over the last 20 years to receive quick access to my inner being. And then with the tools learned earlier in the first program, I tapped into my trusted source (God) for a quick discussion. Here is what happened.
The Doubter reared his ugly head.
I woke with a huge pit in my stomach, a headache, a feeling of despair, and "What the Hell am I doing here?" circling around my mind. I tried putting another pillow over my head to quiet the din. I told myself to "shut-up." Eventually, I was able to will myself back to sleep. When waking again for the day, the noise in my head was still present. I decided to rise and take a shower, in hopes to wash away the doubts and fears that were banging on the drum in my head.
Standing under the shower head, I consciously felt the warm and inviting water flow over my body. With my eyes closed I imagined the water washing away the negatives of the dark unknown, the filth going down the drain once and for all. Ahhh, I felt much better. Or so I thought.
Money was no longer the issue because I worked through that part. So what else was I afraid of and of why? I couldn't quite put my finger on it, yet knew it had to do with not being good enough, not having the experience, plus a whole bunch of other "not's."
I dealt with the Doubter as best as I could in the beginning and acknowledged his presence. That was enough for me to put the doubts on the back burner and keep him quiet until I figured things out. I took care of the Doubter with the money part, and I'd be able to deal with him on the other parts that were coming up for me as well.
Back to present day.
I recall this story each time a similar situation shows itself. It is a reminder to face the fear and to question the why. It is also a great tool that I've learned to keep nearby, pulling it out of my back pocket when needed. Sharing this knowledge and the accompanying tool is one of my favorite parts of coaching.
One of my many decisions today was to declare, once and for all, how I want to be visible to the world, professionally speaking.

“Women, I believe, search for fellow beings who have faced similar struggles, conveyed them in ways a reader can transform into her own life, confirmed desires the reader had hardly acknowledged - desires that now seem possible. Women catch courage from the women whose lives and writings they read, and women call the bearer of that courage friend.”
