One day a visitor stopped by while Alice was sitting on a log outside the cottage. “What are you writing?” the elderly woman asked.
“I’m writing a story of beauty,” Alice replied.
“Of beauty?” the old woman snapped back in disgust. “Why would anyone want to waste their time writing about that? There is no beauty here; only famine and high taxes,” she added.
Alice was not about to let the old hag get by with those words and thoughts. “Oh, but can’t you see the glorious blue sky and the colorful birds flying high above? Or the beautiful reds and greens of the forest? Or the cute and soft-furred animal babies born to their mothers?”
“Humph!” The old woman walked away even more doubled over in her stance as when she first approached Alice.
Alice thought how sad it was that some people just can’t find happiness in their surroundings. To not be able to look around and see all of the miracles and blessings right in front of them was totally incomprehensible. How could anyone be like that? Were they ever happy? What happened in their life that made them grow so cold? Whatever it was, it must have been absolutely horrible.
“That will never happen to me,” Alice thought to herself as she went back to writing.
How do you approach your day? What do you see around you? Can you see the beauty in it all?
Take a moment, it doesn’t have to be a very long one, and drink in the beauty that surrounds you. Include your home, your children, the sun or clouds, the sights or sounds of being outdoors. Marvel at the beauty before you, and do it often; this small act will keep the “humphs” at bay, disappearing into their own kind of forest.
