The sun was setting and the outdoors had the dusk of green all about. And all at once I saw a flicker of small light by the bush! Could it be?
Never in the sixteen years that we lived in this house have I seen this phenomenon! Wait! There was another flicker of light near the porch! It was! It was! The lightning bugs were out! Beautiful fireflies signaling their goodnight wishes!
Eons have passed since I’ve seen lightning bugs; what a blessing they were to me; for that instance took me back to a time of my youth when the fireflies were numerous and visible each night… or so it seemed.
Crawling into bed I realized those lightning bugs were sent to remind me to go back to the child, find the little girl inside that gets excited about every new experience, attacks everything with unabated passion and innocence!
As children we trust without caution and we grow and learn and excel! As adults we proceed in taking heed each day with the responsibilities that lay ahead.
Can you feel the weight of that last sentence….how heavy it is?
My own childhood was long ago, my kids grown, and waiting for the next generation to make their appearance. Sometimes I get buried in the daily muck that to have fun and laugh is not within my schedule.
Also as I got into bed last night, I gave thanks for the gentle reminder that even the smallest of things can bring about happiness, pleasure, smiles, and laughter.
Today I’m going to look around through the eyes of my inner child to see as many tiny wonders as possible.
Will you come out and play with me?
“Look at everything as though you are seeing it for the first time, with eyes of a child, fresh with wonder.“ ~ Joseph Cornell
