I replied, “I’ve wanted to do that sometime,” thinking I had already missed my chance.
The following day, I drove past the library again while on another errand. This time I noticed the date was three days away; I could still participate. After my errand was complete I stopped into the library to inquire more about the open mic readings.
“Just show up with your poetry, sign in and when your name is called, get up and begin reading.”
That’s all there was to it? Yep, that’s all there was to it.
Later in the day I talked with a friend and she mentioned a poem she was working on. Kismet? Fate? Synchronicity at its best? I said, “Well, that’s another reason why I’m calling,” and explained the open mic, asking if she’d like to accompany me to the event.
So the other night we both attended the open mic with approximately fourteen other people; eight of us read original poems, Robert Frost, and were even sung a Gaelic lullaby to. What an amazing hour!
What made the evening even more special was that my friend read a poem she wrote for someone who recently helped her over a rough patch. She gave me a copy of that poem; on the bottom it read, “Written for my dear friend, Peggy Lee Hanson.”
Oh my goodness!
I’ve written many poems for others in my life, however, never received one. My heart felt as if it skipped a beat or two.
I made a commitment to step out of my comfort zone, being in alignment with my theme of 2012 to become more visible by attending this poetry event. I had no idea in my wildest imagination the reward it held for me in doing so.
I am a coach, mentor, author, and speaker. In order for me to be great at what I do, I practice what I preach every day, and I teach my lessons learned, the good and the bad. But when the lesson happens that is this fantastic, I will share it with the world.
Go do something you’ve been thinking about for a while. Do not seek permission. Take a friend along if you need that type of support; however, your assignment is “just go do it.”
